Night Owls book store is the one spot on campus open late enough to help out even the most practiced slacker. The employees’ penchant for fighting the evil creatures of the night is just a perk…
Valerie McTeague’s business model is simple: provide the students of Edgewood College with a late-night study haven and stay as far away from the underworld conflicts of her vampire brethren as possible. She’s lived that life, and the price she paid was far too high to ever want to return.
Elly Garrett hasn’t known any life except that of fighting the supernatural werewolf-like beings known as Creeps or Jackals. But she always had her mentor and foster father by her side—until he gave his life protecting a book that the Creeps desperately want to get their hands on.
When the book gets stashed at Night Owls for safe keeping, those Val holds nearest and dearest are put in mortal peril. Now Val and Elly will have to team up, along with a mismatched crew of humans, vampires, and lesbian succubi, to stop the Jackals from getting their claws on the book and unleashing unnamed horrors…
I always have high hopes when I start a new urban fantasy series. Nothing makes me happier than a good book within my favorite genre so I’ve always been willing to dig very deep in order to find one. Thankfully, Night Owls was well worth the time it took to read it, and then some. That’s not to say that it was free of flaws, but there was a lot to admire, especially for a series opener.

There are two types of supernatural creatures in this world: Jackals or Creeps, vicious, bloodthirsty killing machines, and vampires like Val. Val herself was a Hunter for many years. Her job was to find Jackals and kill them just as mercilessly as they killed humans everywhere. After a massacre only she survived, Val left hunting to other vampires and opened a small bookstore that she runs with the help of her Renfield, Chaz.

Flawed or not, Night Owls is a valiant attempt to introduce some changes into the urban fantasy genre. The first is a notable absence of romance, which takes us back to the early days of UF and its very roots. Secondly, the third person multiple perspectives narrative, by definition foreign to this genre and not at all well suited for it. The first attempt can easily be described as praiseworthy and mostly successful. The absence of romantic entanglements between the five core characters allowed other, some would say more important storylines to stand out and kept the focus exactly where it’s supposed to be – on the main plot. The narrative mode, however wasn’t nearly as successful, and this is where the lack of romance did some serious harm. With no couple to get emotionally invested in, the distance between reader and character, created by the author’s choice of narrative mode,

For all the novelty it brings in structure, Night School is thematically old school urban fantasy, my very favorite kind. We have a decent mythology-based world, excellent protagonists and plenty of action to keep us entertained. While there’s no romance to speak of, it is by no means an emotionally empty book. Quite the contrary: these characters give us plenty to worry about.

All things considered, Night Owls is an exciting start to what promises to be a great new urban fantasy series. Book 2 hasn’t been announced yet, but I hope we’ll have a release date soon.

  1. I think I'm going to wait to see how this series progresses before jumping in. I find that with UF, I definitely do need at least a hint of romance to keep me invested. In some series it's the only thing that keeps me going, though in most it's the icing on the cake, so perhaps if this series evolves to have a romance (though hopefully no love triangle, what with five main characters!), then I'll definitely be on board since I love the sound of this world and its old school take on the genre opposed to a lot of the newer novels. Wonderful review, as always, Maja! :)

  2. Gah! I kind of had high hopes for this one and now I am not so sure about it. I am so nervous about the third person narrative, that is so make or break for me. :(

    Wonderful honest review Maja!!

  3. Sounds fun! I'm always a sucker for books that have bookstores/libraries. LOL I need to read more urban fantasy in general.

  4. I don't know how I would respond to the third person multiple perspectives narrative. Normally if I were to enjoy such a narration style, the voice of each character must be very distinguishable from one another. Otherwise, it would only become too confusing to understand and too hard to keep track of who is talking. So, I'm a bit hesitant about this :/ I will probably wait a bit longer and see.

  5. I always struggle with multiple perspectives Maja, I just start to lose interest because I have a hard time connecting to anyone when I'm bounced around to a number different people. And while I appreciate that this story doesn't introduce a romance and strives to return to where UF started, I'm a romance girl at heart so I know I'll be wanting one. I can't help it! I think I'll pass on this one for now, but your review was beautiful:)

  6. This one is giving me a CV vibe, Maja and I don't know if it's because of the cover or two college girls. I've been really disappointed in the direction of the CV series so I think I'll see what book 2 is like before picking up this series.

  7. I do enjoy a little bit of romance in most of the books I read, but it does sounds refreshing to get something different for a change. Multiple narratives are quite hit and miss for me, though. It's a shame it creates a bit of a distance between the reader and characters here. Still, I'm glad you enjoyed it for the most part. I hope the the series will grow into a strong one. :) Lovely review, Maja!

  9. I was so impatient about this one and I was also so disappointed. It's ok but not that much, and I'll try book2 to know if I continue the series or not. I'm glad you enjoyed it a little more than me.

  10. I am looking forward to this one myself. Always on the look out for the next new Paranormal to follow and I am glad to hear that it has some promising key factors even if flawed.

  11. I grabbed this one as I am on the hunt for a good UF. I am happy to hear that this worked for you and I like that it doesn't have a romance, that can always come later.

  12. Oh I don't mind the absence of romance even as much as I like it. Not necessary for a good book. I am less sure of the multi POVs but I have read a few where it works. Yep, you have me curious about this one! Love me a good UF!

  13. Ooh, I'm not excited about the third person multiple perspectives narrative in my UF. I don't mind it not being 1st person but...I'm just not sure about that part. However, I'm excited about the rest of it! On my shelf...reading soon!

  14. I trust your UF expertise implicitly Maja, and this sounds like this series has a lot of promise. I'm not a huge fan of 3rd person, and without a romance to keep me invested I can see how there might not be enough of a connection to the characters. I think I'll wait until the next book to see your thoughts on it before jumping in, but I'm excited that there is some new originality happening in the genre. Lovely honest review!

  16. You are like the person I stalk when I am in dire need of an urban fantasy novel (they're my brain candy) so I am really glad to see that you found a new one to enjoy. I am always on the look out for new ones but it takes so much effort for me to find one that appeals to me.

I think there are a couple of UFs out there were romance isn't the focus until later on in the series but it's not something I've heard of. Multiple perspectives is something I thing depends on the context. I might not mind them or they might make my life difficult. :P

    Great Review, Maja! :)

  17. I reviewed this one day too and I also enjoyed it. The third person multi POV worked surprisingly well for me, though it was weird at first. I'm curious if there might be romance in the future. I can see two potential couples. But I like that it's not at all romantic in this first book. I'm curious to see where things go.
I hope you're feeling okay Maja, I've been thinking of you!

  18. Sorry to hear the flaws were there, but good that it tried to bring new things or elements to pnr

  19. Most novels have at least a bit of romance so I always find it refreshing when a novel doesn't have any. Despite its flaws, this sounds like a solid book overall.

  20. I like the sound of the cast of characters! I don't mind the lack of romance, esp. when the world setting is intriguing. Thanks for sharing!

  21. I like the sounds of this book. Partly because there's a bookstore! Also, I enjoy a romance-free read sometimes.

  23. Great review Maja, I plan to read this, like you I love old school UF and don't need a romance throughout. I am curious to see how this develops and it sounds like a solid beginning. Wonderful review.

  27. I love the title and the idea of a book store being her form of income. It's interesting to leave out the romance, I think it's a good thing, but I'm sure a lot of readers will miss it

  28. I'm not to happy about the lack of romance here. I mean some of the best UF books I've read have such amazing romance in it. I'm sure I'll miss it here. But still the whole concept sounds so good. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I hope this series gets better and better. Great review, Maja :)

  29. First of all, I'm new to your blog and it looks FANTASTIC. I love the colors and the design and the drawings and the patterns... le sigh. *AHEM*

Going back to the review at hand, you made me excited for this book. I'm not usually too big on paranormal stuff, or even Urban Fantasy stuff, but you made it sound really good! And one where romance is not a central point is always a welcome change that I won't turn away! It would be interesting how it would play it considering it's usually one of the biggest factors in UF.

Thanks for your review; added this one to my TBR! :D

  30. Heck, nowadays, I just wanted to start an Urban Fantasy book, period. I'm not much a reader of the genre but when I come here and read your fantastic reviews, it makes me want to run to the nearest bookstore and pick one up.

So glad this was decent for you as a starter. I hope the series develops well. :)

  32. I like the sound of Night Owls and its old shool UF style. The characters sound pretty unique, but like you, I find it hard sometimes to get emotionally invested when told from third person. Great review, Maja :)

  34. I was hoping this would be an awesome new UF series but I saw one other review for this series that said something similar. I like a hint of lovin' in my UF but I might still give this one a try down the road. Totally fair review!!!
