Nurse Edie Spence is once again called upon to save a life…and this time, it’s personal. Can her new community of zombies, vampires, and shapeshifters come to her rescue when she needs them most?

When Edie was fired from her paranormal nursing job at County Hospital, her whole world came crashing down. Now she’s is once again shaken to her core. Her mother is deathly ill and there’s only one thing that will save her: vampire blood. But with the paranormal community shunning Edie, where can she obtain it…without losing her own life in the process?
Edie hopes to procure it at her new job at the clinic across town, where the forces of evil loom large. Vampire gang wars are rampant. Old underground enemies are rising to the surface. And Edie’s zombie ex-boyfriend has arrived at the scene—but is he the same man he used to be? And what should she make of the enigmatic doctor with whom she shares an unexpected connection? She’ll have to figure it out soon, because all hell is about to break loose—literally—and time is running out…
The number of urban fantasy series I still get excited about becomes smaller every year. I’ve been disappointed by authors and characters more times than I can count, and I even flat-out refuse to speak of a series that went in an unwanted direction. (I’d totally tell you which series it is, but you know, I’m refusing to speak about it.;) I am very emotional where urban fantasy is involved and I can hold a grudge like nobody’s business. But sometimes (rarely) an author surprises me in a very different way, and that’s exactly what Cassie Alexander has done.

The Edie Spence series is right back on track and I’m happier than a bird with a french fry. My relationship with Edie Spence wasn’t always smooth and painless. She is a very lonely character, a night shift nurse with a brother addicted to heroin and very few friends. In the first book, Nightshifted, she was so easy to identify with, and while I’m sure she would never want my pity, there were times when I just couldn’t help it. The second book, Moonshifted, brought with it a different Edie, one who took loneliness to a whole new level. She was in a very bad place back then, but I didn’t appreciate how she handled it. Instead of fighting for herself, she allowed every supernatural creature in town to walk right over her and it didn’t take long for it to become very tedious.

In Shapeshifted, Edie is different yet again. Depressed, yes. Possibly lonelier than ever. But she is also determined to do something about it, to find a way to help herself and those she loves, and that’s something I can work with. I adored this new Edie, and I loved seeing her out of her element. Her job in Y4 was fun, but working with human patients while at the same time struggling with supernatural issues was even better.

Shapeshifted shows significant improvement in the romance department as well. This is the second romantic involvement for Edie since the beginning of the series, and while the romances Cassie writes are never straightforward or simple (or even sweet, for that matter), I loved that this one had time to develop, that it was born out of mutual trust and friendly affection. I’m trying to avoid mentioning the name of this love interest, but it is someone I was rooting for from the start. I think he’s the only one who really sees Edie, and he’ll probably be great for her self-esteem.

So yes, I am a huge fan of this series once again, and I hope the next book will be as exciting as this one. Can I please have it now?

  1. I'm so glad to see that this series is still going strong for you Maja. I know how you feel, sometimes even I need something different than my contemporary reads especially when I'm not enjoying them as much. I have the first two books in this series from when I won them from your blog, so I'm even more eager to give them a try. Also I'm quite intrigued by this love interest in this book. Great review my lovely!

  4. I'm starting to think about reading more urban fantasy- I rarely read it so I'm still iffy about the definition of it (goes on google) But that cover is like, a rating of scariness of 1-10- 100 million. *sudders*
I'm seriously intrigued by this series now, I saw a review of the second one not too long ago. Now I'm convinced I should put this on my TBR pile.

I'm glad the romance was better!

    Brilliant review, chick! <33

  5. I didn't read this first one (though it's on my list!!) but if this one makes you happier than a bird with a french fry (SUCH a happy bird), I need to check this out!! Poor Edie, being all depressed and such, though.

  7. I don't read much urban fantasy but you have pretty much sold me! I haven't read anything in this series but I think I should get the first one, I'm happy that while lots of them are disappointing you, this one isn't at all. How great that the author seemed to get the romance in this one right!

  8. This is UF really? I dunno would never assumed it. I see you really like this series and I'm so happy it didn't disappoint. I still know how you feel about some genres - I feel the same about paranormal. I was a great fan but then everything started sounding the same. That's why UF is high on my list. It's new to me. Great review Maja :)

  9. Oooo this series sounds great Maja! Edie seems like a really well-developed and layered character, and I'm always on the lookout for more of those. I'm excited about the romance as well, especially since it's with someone you've been rooting for since the beginning. It's so nice when that happens:) Fabulous review my friend!

  11. I am so excited to hear you love this series because I have the first two books and have been holding on to them just waiting for a chance to start them. I was debating on buying the third today since I really don't know a lot about them but I think I just might grab it too today after reading your review. Good adult UF are getting harder and harder to come by now it seems.

  12. I also feel the same about the dwindling amount of interesting Urban Fantasy's these days (although I still have plenty I have yet to start... been trying to finish up series I already have in progress first.) This one definitely sounds like one I should bump up the list though!

  13. yay for finding a series that is still going strong! I can understand about following books for a while only for them to come out huge disappointments when stuff goes where you don't want it to go. Happened recently to me as well, that was annoying lol. Anyway, great review. I have yet to read this one but I love UF and always looking for new ones to try :)

  14. I've been wanting to get into this series just because it is UF with a nurse. So want to see if I can push this at my nurse mother! LOL I love the sound of the romance and now I must read these to see if I would root for the same person. Pushing the series up the wishlist!

  15. Happy as a bird with a French fry? Lol! I love that! I'll have to check this out. You know I'm more open to UF now. But I still want to try Mercy Thompson first. Wonderful review, Maya. :)

  16. I've heard good things about this series and I'm glad you seem to be enjoying it. I have about 500 different UF series on my shelves to read but this sounds like another I should add!

  17. I love it when the MC gets the love interest that I'm rooting for. It's even better when that relationship is based on friendship and trust and isn't insta-love. Great review, Maja. Hopefully, I'll be able to get around to reading this series someday.

  18. I do want to read this series as a whole. I read the second one when I was reviewing for Romantic Times, so I've never checked out the first novel. I'm glad the third shows how Edie is evolving and you loved it so much!

  20. Okay, I'm definitely curious about which UF series you're referring to. Not that I would necessarily know which one you are talking about because I've never gotten into the genre. I could maybe see myself reading and enjoying this one though? I definitely like what you had to say for it. I'll think about maybe reading a UF novel one day and maybe choosing this series. Great thoughts!

  21. I'm with Aylee. I need to know which series went in an unwanted direction for you! It'll bother me until I find out now. ;) I do know what you mean about holding grudges though. I tend to throw a bit of a tantrum when a series or book doesn't end up doing what I want it to. I'm glad Shapeshifted got things back on track for you. I hope the next book doesn't disappoint either!

    1. *sigh* It's the Sookie Stackhouse series, otherwise known as the series that ruined urban fantasy for far too many unsuspecting readers.

  22. Haha, I was about to demand to know the offending series, but I can see you've been pressured into revealing it. So many people agree with you, but I'm too far in to go back. I'll get there eventually, and miraculously somehow it hasn't been spoiled for me yet! But I'm prepared to be disappointed.

This series, however, sounds wonderful! I've never heard of it before (though it's never a surprise to be introduced to new UF series on your blog), but now I'm definitely going to give book one a try. I'm glad to hear Edie is back in your good graces and taking charge of her life. Fantastic review, and thanks for introducing me to this!

  23. Wow! That's really interesting. Not too many people would actually think about this the way you just did. Im really impressed that there's so much about this subject that's been uncovered and you did it so well. clipping path
