In Allison Sekemoto's world, there is one rule left: Blood calls to blood

She has done the unthinkable: died so that she might continue to live. Cast out of Eden and separated from the boy she dared to love, Allie will follow the call of blood to save her creator, Kanin, from the psychotic vampire Sarren. But when the trail leads to Allie's birthplace in New Covington, what Allie finds there will change the world forever-and possibly end human and vampire existence.

There's a new plague on the rise, a strain of the Red Lung virus that wiped out most of humanity generations ago-and this strain is deadly to humans and vampires alike. The only hope for a cure lies in the secrets Kanin carries, if Allie can get to him in time.

Allison thought that immortality was forever. But now, with eternity itself hanging in the balance, the lines between human and monster will blur even further, and Allie must face another choice she could never have imagined having to make.
The last two books in Julie Kagawa’s impressive bibliography – first The Lost Prince and now The Eternity Cure – show a certain level of maturity and self-assuredness that simply wasn’t there before. I always enjoyed her books, even those first few ones in which she relied on familiar mythology and tropes, but now that she trusts herself enough to fly solo, like has become too small a word for how I feel. In The Eternity Cure more than ever before, Kagawa kept all the fine threads tightly in control.

Things that bothered me in The Immortal Rules, like lack of backstory and worldbuilding, were neatly taken care of with Dawn of Eden, a prequel novella published in the ‘Til the World Ends anthology. Going into this sequel with the hows and whys properly explained allowed me to relax and sink into the story without the constant nagging questions rising at the back of my mind.

Our long-awaited reunion with Allison Sekemoto brings with it a few surprises. Months have passed since she left Eden behind, and while she’s getting closer to Kanin every day, she still hasn’t found him. After so many months spent in solitude, searching fruitlessly for her Sire, Allie is a somewhat different vampire. She is much stronger and far more confident, but even more importantly, she knows who and what she is, and although she suffers from occasional bursts of nostalgia, she never whines or wallows in self-pity anymore. This Allie is someone I can get behind, a person (oh, fine, a vampire) I can admire.

It’s probably why I felt so strongly about the romance this time, when it failed to touch me at all in the first book. Back then, I simply didn’t understand the attraction between her and Zeke, it seemed like something included pro forma rather than a passionate, heartfelt thing. Allie is not the only one who’s changed, matured. Zeke is hardened, different, but still the kind, gentle boy somewhere underneath. Still, this new and improved version seemed somehow more believable in those circumstances. To explain it like a vampire would: he stopped being prey and became a hunter instead.

After reading dozens of reviews, I think it’s safe to conclude that Jackal, Allie’s blood brother, is the readers’ favorite. I just love redeemed characters, but I love characters that dance on that fine line between good and bad, likeable and obnoxious, even more. Allie kept having to remind herself to hate him for what he’s done, and I had the same problem, although it’s safe to say Zeke never came near forgiving and forgetting. Jackal brought with him what the first book sorely lacked – a wonderful sense of humor. Without him, this would have been an action-packed, tense, but humorless adventure.

As much as I enjoyed my love-hate relationship with Jackal, Kanin remains my favorite. Quiet and solemn, he seemed a bit more approachable this time around, and possibly a bit warmer too, especially towards Allie. We finally learned about his past, and the revelations were timed perfectly. Instead of turning me and everyone else against him, they just made me love him even more.

The Eternity Cure is positively addictive and it took me completely by surprise. As someone who felt merely lukewarm about the first book, I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did, but I said exactly the same about The Lost Prince. I won’t make the same mistake a third time.

  2. I totally agree with you! The first book in this series lacked a good background story and some thing, but here everything is nicely connected. I really enjoyed this sequel too and I can't wait to read the third book. Great review Maja :)

  3. Allison really grew on me in this book! And I love how there were a lot more emotions and a darker sense to the story. But its weird because I liked the romance in book one, but didn't really care for it all that much in this one. Awesome review!

  4. Maja I have to agree with everything you said. I love characters with who you never know which way they will go, Jackal was so entertaining, but also had me utterly baffled. I think we will have a battle on our hands as Kanin is certainly my favourite character too, I love how much of an important part he played in this book, I just loved everything about him. I can't wait to find out which way Kagawa will go with the next book, I just hope my precious heart can take it! Wonderful review hun! :)

  5. Maja, you got it so completely correct! Jackal <33333333

Hehe :) The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it was slow for the first 25%, other than that, I agree with you, Julie made this a far better book than the first one.

I still have yet to read her Fey series so fingers crossed its good >,<

  6. I still wasn't feeling the Zeke thing. I kind of wanted him to go far away (ie, Eden) and get out of the story so Allie could get on with all the stuff she had to do. He was a distraction, in my opinion.

And Jackal! What a fabulous jackass! Adore him.

  7. Kanin is awesome, and under appreciated I think, so keep it up ;)
I think Jackal was so awesome to me because I just didn't expect it.

  8. I'm so excited to hear you enjoyed this so much, Maja. I still need to pick up the prequel and then read this. I loved Zeke in the first one and I'm loving the sound of his changes in this one. Wonderful review. :)

  9. Absolutely stunning review Maja, you so beautifully summed up everything I loved about this sequel! I don't know why you leave me comments about an inferiority complex when you write reviews like this. Pfffffffft. I couldn't have said any of that better than you did, and I'm so glad you were as big a fan of this book as I was! *high five for Kanin love*

  10. Awesome review! I really need to push this series up my TBR pile (how many times have I said that this week? *sigh*). I have heard nothing but great reviews on this dark gritty series!

  11. I'm so glad I gave this one a shot... I also felt lukewarm about the first one and wasn't even convinced I wanted to pick this one up. Fantastic review, I agree with you completely. Can't wait for the next installment! :)

  12. I did really enjoy TIR and loved Kanin, but Jackal became a firm favourite in this one. And while I much prefer Zeke as he is in this one, and I like the romance, I wouldn't say it lights any fires in me. Not my favourite part of this series. Great review Maja, I'm glad you're starting to enjoy this series more.

  13. YES, Kanin is my absolute favorite too! Unfortunately, though, I won't be continuing this series. I couldn't finish Iron Fey and while The Immortal Rules was certainly better, I'm not a fan of Zeke in the least I'm glad you're enjoying these books more, though, Maja. Kagawa's writing just isn't for me.

  14. I agree. Allie is so much more mature in this book. Zeke as well. I actually didn't care much for Zeke in the first book but warmed more to him in this one. And yes, you know I loved Jackal and I still say he was my fave in this book. I would love to see him and Zeke become friends. What a ride that would be!! LOL I also loved that Jackal wasn't redeemed but skated that line. So perfectly said!

  15. Ha, I'm with everyone else on this: Jackal was an amazing addition, and he was the best part of the book for me, providing humor and more shades of gray. Sadly, I didn't like this one as much, which may have been more about my mood at the time or something, but I just couldn't connect to Allie at all. Anyway, I'm glad it was much stronger for you!

  16. I was the opposite. I liked the first book more than this one. But Jackal kept it up there for me.

  17. Your review could be MY review, only much better said. I felt exactly the same way about everything! I didn't feel the connection with Zeke in the first book and loved him in this one. I loved that fine line of good and bad with Jackal and he certainly stole the show, but Kanin is my favorite as well. I'm so excited to see where things go in the next book!

  18. I'm so glad you enjoyed this book. I haven't started to read this book yet, but I plan to do so soon. Great review :)

  19. I wholeheartedly agree with your review! I just finished reading this and couldn't agree more! Kawaga has definitely developed some mad writing skills!!!

  20. I wasn't a huge fan of the first book but I think I'll give this one a shot . I mean you weren't that impressed by book #1 as well but you liked this one...

    Great review :)

  21. What a wonderful review! I wholeheartedly agree that Kagawa is becoming a much more assured writer. This series is surpassing the Iron Fey books in my affections. I'm SO glad to hear that you're a big fan of Kanin too. I have always loved him, and that love just strengthens the more story I get. Jackal definitely went up in my esteem in this installment, mostly because he entertained me. "I love characters that dance on that fine line between good and bad, likeable and obnoxious" <--YES, these kinds of characters are endlessly entertaining to me, in any medium. Beautiful review, Maja, you really did this book justice (I'm tempted to skip writing a review and just point people over here)!

  22. I actually thought Kanin would be my favourite here, but I LOVED what Jackal brought to the book. I sure wasn't expecting that! You liked this one a little more than I did (it took me a while to get into it), but I agree that Kagawa's writing has really progressed since The Iron King. Brilliant review as always. :)

  23. Yes, yes, yes I so agree and loved this! The wait for book three will be killer and I am anxious to see what she does with it. Wonderful, spot on review!

  24. I've definitely been seeing a ton of mention of Jackal so ever without having read the first book yet he intrigues me! >.< I'm curious to see which one will end up my favorite. I still have my ARC of the first one and I haven't read it yet eep! I'm glad the sequel is such a solid installment though it's motivation to get me to read both back to back! :D

  25. Glad you enjoyed this one more than the first, Maja! I felt a bit different because I'm still against the whole Zeke/Ally romance, but Jackal redeemed the whole book for me. Also Sarren, who was an excellent psychopathic villain :)

  26. I have yet to read this one but I loved Kanin in The Immortal Rules so I'm excited that we finally get to know more about his past. I'm also looking forward to seeing a different side of Jackal. Oh, and while I wasn't a fan of the romance in the previous book, it sounds like it's more believable now.

  27. I must be one of the few people who never felt connected to Jackal. Honestly, he annoyed me. I loved Kanin. All the blood and gore was a bit too much for me, though I agree that this book was surprising and different from book 1. I also though that Zeke and Allison were more compelling together, though I'm having trouble committing to a human/vampire relationship in general. What is your take on the end? My friend Heather and I had a big debate on wether or not something big has happened to one of the characters. But I don't want to say specifics and spoil anything.
