Review: Divinely Ruined by Diane Alberts

Divinely RuinedDivinely Ruined by Diane Alberts

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After six months of writing for The Nocturnal Library, the time has come for me to review my first adult paranormal romance. It will probably be the last, too, so enjoy it while it lasts – I certainly did.

Divinely Ruined is incredibly sweet, a perfect Sunday afternoon read. I was drawn to it because of the pretty cover, but the content turned out to be just as adorable. I know what you’re thinking: oh, not another angel story, there is one too many out there! and you’re right. But Divinely Ruined is not really an angel story. It’s a story about a lost woman trying to become an angel by saving a very lost and lonely man and ultimately falling in love.

Rebecca Chance is one of the rare few humans who get the opportunity to become angels. She has successfully completed her training and a few missions, and now she is just one assignment away from getting her wings and finally finding her purpose. All she has to do is save Anthony Weis, a single father of a three-year-old daughter, from becoming a murderer. But both Tony and Miranda are proving to be irresistible, just the right cure for the damaged and abused girl Rebecca still is, deep inside.

Tony Weis is bitter and jaded. His wife Jane walked out in him and their baby girl three years ago and he’s been struggling ever since. He loves his daughter so much and he wishes more than anything to be able to give her more than he already has, but he just keeps experiencing one failure after another. When a beautiful, redheaded woman shows up at his doorstep claiming that she’s an angel and that she’s there to save him, he snarls and complains, but he can't help falling for her, not even after he discovers that she can read his mind.

My only issue with Divinely Ruined is Tony’s daughter Miranda. While I understand that certain liberties can be taken when writing fluff, and that accuracy of any kind isn’t exactly a priority, as a mother of a five-year-old daughter, I have to say this: no child is that perfect.

This book was just what I needed at the time. I can’t remember the last time I felt so good about reading paranormal romance. (Actually, maybe I can: it was Maybe This Time about a year ago.) The best I can say about it is that it made me want to read something else by Diane Alberts very soon.

A copy of this book was kindly provided by the publisher, Entangled Publishing, for review purposes.

  1. Amazing review, Maja. This sounds like my type of read! Angel books are sort of like mermaid books for me - very hit and miss - so I'm glad you mentioned it's not really a typical angel story. Plus that cover is enough to persuade me really. I'll be giving this one a shot. ;)

P.S I see you're reading The Book of Blood and Shadow. I was pleasantly surprised by that book. I can't wait to hear your thoughts! :)

  2. Oh the cover to this is gorgeous! I can totally see why you were drawn to it! I also thought it would be a typical angel book, but it's good to know that isn't the case! Btw like Sam I'm so happy you're finally reading The Book of Blood and Shadow! How are you finding it so far?

    1. I'm loving the characters so much, especially Nora - she's a linguist at heart, but the plot is pretty far fetched.

  3. Oh, I'm really interested to learn how Rebecca gets the chance to become an angel! Especially since you mentioned that she is a damaged and abused girl. I'm always a sucker for books with fractured characters, so this one sounds very promising!

I'm glad to hear that this book was just what you needed at the time, Maja! I haven't read any Paranormal Romance about angel lately, so I'd definitely give this book a shot! As usual, another AWESOMETASTIC review from you! <3

  4. Ohhh, an adult paranormal romance book!! I actually have this whole list of adult books in my (virtual) notebook that I plan on reading when I'm a little older, and I'm MORE than happy to add this one to the list! The cover is SO gorgeous but it does sort of deal with the Angel Effect of Questioning, so I love that this one isn't your typical angel story. The story of becoming an angel sounds so much cooler! ;)

    Beautiful review, Maja! <3

P.S. That's totally true LOL -- no child is perfect, indeed! x)

  5. I'm still laughing at the coincidence of us reading Diane Alberts the same day! I guess great minds DO think alike! I'm picking this one up this afternoon. It's a holiday here in the States so I can read to my hearts content today!

The cover on this one is to die for. Diane Alberts seems to get all the eye catching ones. Lovely review, Maja. I'm glad you enjoyed this one. :)

  6. I always think that somehow, somewhere, there's a paranormal romance that I would love. I'm just not willing (yet) to sift through all the others and go find it. I love that you read all of these UF's (and the occasional paranormal) - how else would I know which ones are worth trying? Great review today!

And that's a major pet peeve of mine too, when the kids are completely advanced for their ages or unrealistically perfect.

  7. In some ways, she was too childish for a four-year-old, and in others she was too perfect. She always said and did exactly the right thing. She was a plot device rather than an actual character.

  8. oh wow, this one sounds really good! love the cover. totally cute. but a perfect child?! oh dear. that doesn't sound too good...

  9. This one does sounds sweet. Almost like those Christmas movies they air on season, with angels and santa and broken families finding true love and getting their priorities straight. It's a formula that works... but I don't think I'm going to add this one! The cover is great and the story promising (yes, even though it's an angel tale) but I just don't work that well with family stories. I guess they bring too much introspection to a moment where I'm "out of this world; please call later".

All that said... now I'm feeling nostalgic. I think now I need a genuine romance with fluff like the one found in this book... but without the perfect kid, please lol

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. aww Why might this be the last adult paranormal review? I liked it! You definitely captured my attention. Sounds so sweet and sad. Tony sounds like he is in such a bad place so I hope Rebecca can save him. But then maybe she will not become an angel and stay with him? I hope so cause I love an HEA. I don't have any kids but have to agree that none are perfect lol

    1. Paranormal romance isn't a genre I usually read, which is why it took me 6 months the review the first one for the blog.

  11. I'm glad you reviewed this because if I saw the cover and read that it was about angels I would totally pass on this book but you've made it sound a bit different to ALL the other angel books out there which is a good thing in my mind!

  12. Maja, this one sounds fascinating! I've seen it around but didn't really intend on reading it. But now I'm dying to!! Great review :)

  13. Haha why will it be the last adult PNR!? I thought this was YA when I first saw it. It sounds good though although I need a break from any sort of angel stories right now, even though this one is a different sort of angel theme, I'm fed up with them O_O but when I dare them again I'll keep this one in mind. The cover sort of makes it worth it >.<

  14. The cover of Divinely Ruined is DIVINE. I love it xD It's great to know that it's an enjoyable story as well! There are way too many angel romances out there these days but this one sounds amazing except for that one picture perfect character. Loved your review, Maja :)

  15. this sounds like a really cute book. Little kids are definitely not perfect, so that's kind of a bummer they made his daughter seem that way....but the summary sounds great, and I do enjoy a good paranormal romance (adult or otherwise).

  16. Book children are always perfect - polite and honest and adorable! And since I don't have children yet, it really messes with my perception of RL kids. When I see a kid throwing a temper tantrum at the grocery store, I always think, that would never happen in a book! LOL

  17. If you want to read more of this author soon then maybe it WON'T be the last adult PNR you review here:) I hope it isn't the last because I love reading your reviews on every topic. I used to be really into PNR and read so much of it that I think I got genre fatigue. Eventually I'll try some more. Don't you think that the cover girl looks like she has something in her eye?
