Anyan may be trapped in an evil dragon and Blondie may be gone, but Jane knows one thing: she's not about to give up. She's ready to tear down heaven and earth to save her lover, despite those who believe he's lost.

Luckily for Jane, those who've given up on Anyan do not include those closest to her. Defying The Powers That Be, Jane and Company form their own crack squad of misfits, in whose hands the fate of the world may well rest.

With a little help from her friends, the Universe, and lots of snacks, Jane embarks on her greatest adventure yet, confident that with great sacrifice comes great reward. The question is, who will be that sacrifice?

In the sixth and final installment of the series I once adored, Jane True shines brighter than ever. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I’d lost some of my love for her in the last two books. I felt that Peeler was tired of Jane and she made me tired of her, too. But this time, the old Nicole Peeler was back and I could tell how much she enjoyed writing this conclusion.

Tempest Reborn picks up exactly where the last book left off. Jane has suffered many losses and she’s desperate, just like she was when she lost her first love, Jason. But unlike then, she’s not alone – she has allies, friends and family, but most importantly, she is connected to the ancient creature that likes her and wants to lend its strength.

After being pushed and ordered about by everyone but the selected few, Jane finally decides to take control and start acting like the champion. The new Jane is a leader, someone who makes decisions and bears the consequences. With the barghest gone, Ryu is back to help her, but the old flame has long been extinguished. I loved seeing them get comfortable in their friendship and I loved that Ryu got a taste of his own medicine in a way that made him wary, but not resentful.

The romance in Tempest Reborn is exquisite. It’s exactly what I wanted to see ever since Jane and Anyan first showed feelings for each other. Their relationship started as very unbalanced, with Anyan as the more mature and far more experienced, but as Jane suffered one ordeal after another, she also developed a thicker skin and enough self-confidence to be the barghest’s equal. Their happily ever after is wonderful and deeply satisfying and I can’t thank Peeler enough for allowing me to see these characters in such a good, believable place before saying goodbye.

Jane was never one to take sole credit for her accomplishments, but I felt that now more than ever, she realized how much the community means to her. Despite being the champion, the chosen one, she insisted that she was nothing without her friends, and she was probably right.

Although books four and five left a lot to be desired, I still recommend this series as a whole to those who love their urban fantasy with charming characters and a healthy dose of mildly ludicrous humor. I haven’t a clue what the lovely Dr. Peeler is working on next, but I hope she’ll stay true to herself.

  1. I haven't read this series yet, though I've heard great things about it (plus, Nicole is a high school teacher like me so props!). Now that it's over, I think I'll have to read the whole thing. Maybe, by reading it in one gulp, I won't get the same feeling about Jane as you did in those last couple of books (except for the last one, that is).

  3. I haven't read anything in this series or by this author but I am glad that the author redeemed herself and her character in the conclusion to the series, that doesn't always happen these days.

  4. I had no clue you liked this series!! I'll have to jump on this b/c I've had it on my TBR for a while and it keeps nagging me everytime I shelve books near it at work at my library. I really need to start the first book!!!!!

Honestly, I skimmed your review a little b/c I didn't want too many spoilers but I was able to let a lot of it fall out of my brain so I think I'm good.

You know, my library had one book in the series shelved in young adult and one in adult. Which way would you go with this series? I had them move them all to Adult...

  5. I was never attracted to Jane True because it has such a cartoonish cover. (yes I'm shallow I know) but I love your cover for Tempest Reborn.
'Mildly ludicrous humor'? Now I am interested.
Great review Maja, I hope next series by Nicole Peeler is even better. ;)

  7. I am glad to see you enjoyed this one. :) I do have to say though, I did like the HEA between Jane and Anyan. It was touching and sweet. Really looking forward to seeing what new series Peeler comes up with!

  8. I have not read this one myself yet. Always sad when the author loses interest in her own character or has a difficult time. Glad she at least came back to finish it off on a higher note!

  9. I think I'm two books behind in this series, but I have really enjoyed them all so far. I'm really anxious to watch the conclusion come about and I'm happy you enjoyed this last one!

  10. Ooh nice review! I cannot wait to read this one either! Ordered my copy the other day, but who knows when I will get to it! I read book 5 about a month ago! Sooo many books to read.

But wonderful review! I love this series and glad to hear that it ends on a happy note. Not that I had any doubts about that!

  11. YES! I am always leery of ending books, but am so glad you did like this one. I have the first book in my possession, but have yet to find time to read it. I've been wanting to read this series so much ever since I met the author. She is so great! Now that I'm aware of the 4th and 5th books, I probably will like them better than I would have otherwise. :)

  13. I've never heard of this series, but I do love the sound of charming characters and ludicrous humor. :-) I'm willing to stick with a series even if a book or two aren't up to par as long as the ending is strong. It sounds like this one hits the mark, and it's nice to know there's a satisfying HEA to look forward to. Great review, I'll have to check out book one!

  14. I'm not sure I'd pick this series up if books 4 and 5 were not that great for you, Maja. There are too many other UF series that I want to read to add one that is not a "knock-your-socks-off" type of read. Mercy Thompson is a series I'd like to start soon! Glad you enjoyed this series overall. :)
