With power comes enemies. Lots of them.Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies. He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait. Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too. With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…
Wow. I feel like a rug has been pulled from under my feet.
In Spirit, Kemmerer deviated from the usual PNR route and brought something even more emotional and entirely unexpected. It was a bold move, a very risky one, but I always appreciated authors who toy with a genre and make their own rules. While I struggled with both Hunter and Kate at times, I applaud Kemmerer’s effort to do something different and throw her readers off balance.
It could be his element that’s making me love Hunter and hate him at the same time, or it could be a series of questionable actions on his part. Whatever the cause, it made Spirit an extremely thought-provoking, emotional read and left me feeling conflicted… pacified, but not quite ready to trust Hunter completely. Not just yet.
Hunter Garrity is one troubled boy, my friends. If you thought Gabriel’s story was heartbreaking, just you wait until you spend some time in Hunter’s head. Not only is he completely alone in the world, but he is being abused and neglected by the very people who should be taking care of him. I’d probably be bitter and untrusting if I were him, too.
When the new girl shows up in school, Hunter is immediately drawn to her, but he’s sure she has some kind of hidden agenda. Everyone always does, right? Why would she be any different? Unfortunately, Hunter is paranoid, but he is also right – Kate Sullivan is a Guide in training, and she may not be there to get Hunter specifically, but she is definitely after the Merricks.
Hunter has no idea whom to trust, but more importantly, he just can’t decide where his loyalties lie. He wants desperately to hate the Merricks and do what he was taught was right, but they keep making it impossible by being reliable and nice. Guards, on the other hand, haven’t done a single thing right, but Hunter’s father was a Guard and Hunter was trained to become one, so what does that say about him? Every part of Hunter’s story is extremely painful. There were times when I wanted to strangle him, but even then I felt more pity than anger. Kemmerer did an outstanding job with this character, possibly better than with anyone else.
The noose is tightening around the Merricks. The Guards are starting to view them as formidable opponents instead of just underestimating them like they used to. Things are more dangerous than ever in Spirit and Michael and his brothers are forced to make some hard choices. The easiest thing to do would be to just pack up and leave, but each of them now has a reason to stay.
January 2014 can’t come soon enough. Nick’s story promises to be the most heartbreaking of all and after Spirit, I have no idea where Kemmerer might take it, which is both upsetting and thrilling at the same time. Brava, Ms. Kemmerer!
I began to like Hunter more here but like you, I haven't gotten THAT attatched yet. I felt like he was too paranoid. But yeah, that ending came unexpectedly- which was kinda nice for a change.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant review, Maja! I can't for Nick's book either ^,^ <33
I love that this one seems to take a different path than usual, so you've made me curious, Maja. I don't know if I'm continuing with this series, merely because everyone loved Spark and then there was me, but maybe I'll wind up squeezing it in this summer anyway. We'll see. Lovely review, dear!(:
ReplyDeletethe more I read about this series, the more I wish I started it sooner. I hope I can start it soon enough. I bought book 1 so thats exciting :)
ReplyDeleteThis one completely threw me too, I so was not expecting it to be so emotional. I am dying to read Nick's story now as well and I have a feeling I will need another box of tissues ready.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the darkness in this book. Hunter has always been the character that intrigues me.....
ReplyDeleteKate @ Ex Libris
I promised myself to read this series as soon as I get more time cause everyone seem to enjoy it. I don't know much but I can assume that there will be crush-worthy boys here :) I can't wait to meet them. Great review Maja :)
ReplyDeleteOh, man, oh MAN! MAJAAAAA! Why have you done this?! I'm supposed to read this tonight into tomorrow morning for review AND YOU HAVE WRITTEN THIS REVIEW AND NOW MY EYES. I must start it but now I'm also feeling anxious.
ReplyDeleteAND NICK'S STORY. I can't even deal, my friend. I NEED IT NOW. Not in no January of next year *growls*
It's amazing how although I constantly was aggravated with Hunter's decisions, I also cared for him. Wonderful review! I adore the way you shared Hunter's distrust of Kate with the questions.
ReplyDeleteSecret can't be released soon enough. Need Nick and Quinn's POV!
Ooooo Maja this sounds amazing! I kind of like that you still weren't sure about Hunter even by the very end, it definitely makes him a fascinating character. There's something haunting about the characters you just can't quite figure out entirely, and I love those types. I'm a little nervous about the heartbreaking aspect, but I just need to buck up and dive in because I love this world. Thanks for a fantastic review my friend!
ReplyDeleteOk I really need to get out from under my rock and get started on this series. I feel like I am the only person in the Blogoverse who has not met these boys yet. I am definitely curious about the bold move the author took with this one, I am all about that, and I think it's great to change things up to keep a series feeling fresh (especially one that is proving to be as long as this one.)
ReplyDeleteoh wow I am now SUUPER excited! I really loved how heartbreaking Gabriel's story was! Though you sounded like you really loved the book, and i was shocked at the 3.5 stars :( but maybe that's good for you! lovely review!
ReplyDelete- Farag @Majibookshelf
I have been wanting to read this series, it seems like one people have mostly been raving over. And a book that kind of twists you up inside like that is definitely good. I look forward to starting the series!
ReplyDeleteYou had me at deviated from the PNR route!!! Plus... am I the only one left to not have read any of this series??? *sigh* I know I'm going to cave soon, especially after this review. Darn! Now I know I have to read it. I'm curious about how the reason to stay is more powerful than to leave. Not every author can pull that off convincingly.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read your review Maja because I plan to read this one really soon. You seem to have enjoyed this one though, and from your last paragraph it seems to be taking quite an unpredictable direction. I'm really looking forward to this one :)
ReplyDeleteWow. I'm seeing these books popping up around everywhere. Thanks for sharing it. :)
ReplyDeleteI had some issues with Hunter is this one. You're so right, he's very troubled indeed and like you, I can see why. I was still disappointed with his reactions to the Merricks, though. The enjoyment I got from Spirit was mainly due to the secondary characters. Wonderful review, Maja. :)
ReplyDeleteI really liked the direction Brigid Kemmerer took with both Hunter and this book. I definitely wanted to strangle Hunter at times too, but I still couldn't help but fall in love with his character along the way. You're right--the author did steer away from the usual formula, which definitely caught me by surprise. I can't wait to see what Nick's book will be like now! Lovely review, Maja. :)
ReplyDeleteHunter kind of broke my heart. I think the book was hard to get into as a while because I didn't care at all for Kate, plus it was difficult to see Hunter making bad decisions about who to trust, considering we've seen how awesome the Merricks are from the past books. Still, I definitely enjoyed this one, and how much of a character study it was.
ReplyDeleteHunter is my least favorite character in the series, that's why I didn't read this book yet, even though I got an ARC and it's been quite a while since then.
ReplyDeleteBut your review makes it seem so much more promising and I hope to enjoy this book as well.
