A vampire never gets old. But neither do his enemies. When a figure from Ethan's dark past makes a splashy debut in Chicago, Merit and her Master don't know whether he's friend or foe. But they'll have to figure out soon, because trouble is brewing in the Windy City.
At an exclusive society soiree attended by the upper echelons of the human and supernatural worlds, Merit and Ethan barely stop the assassination of a guest. When the target turns out to be a shady businessman with a criminal edge, Merit suspects a human vendetta. But the assassins have fangs....
The connections to Chicago's Houses go deeper than Merit knows, and even one wrong move could be her last...

Just recently Chloe Neill announced that she’ll be ending her Chicagoland Vampires series with book 13. While I’ll be very sad to say goodbye to these characters, I feel that she’s made the right decision. The series has been noticeably losing steam and the last few books have become just a tiny bit repetitive and predictable. However, predictable can be as comfortable as a warm blanket, and when you add to that a bunch of characters you’re very familiar with, you get a recipe for a very pleasant afternoon.

I’ve been with this series from the start, through excitement, disappointment and everything in between. I’ve loved Merit and Ethan and I’ve suffered with them. I feel like I know them inside and out, which is the absolute best, especially in my favorite genre.

This time around, the vampire that created (and tormented) Ethan, a vampire supposedly dead for centuries, is suddenly in Chicago threatening everything Ethan and Merit have created. To make matters worse, Merit’s ex-boyfriend and leader of the Navarre house, Morgan, is neck-deep in trouble and asking Cadogan for help.

This installment was very emotional for the usually unflappable Merit. She’s always so confident, so sure of her place in the world, but everything was thoroughly shaken this time around and her struggles were extremely hard. I loved seeing the supportive side of Ethan, who remained by her side the entire time. These two have become such a wonderful, mature couple. They’ve finally started communicating openly and completely honestly, and now that there’s nothing between them, I’m enjoying every moment we see them together.

The main thing that bothers me, that has always bothered me in this series is its very short time span. We’ve spent years with these characters, but for them, a lot less time has passed, which makes everything that’s happened to them all the more stressful and far too unlikely. The short time affects the romance as well – it’s much harder for me to believe in its strength when it’s only been a year and a half or so, and Ethan and Merit have had maybe two peaceful days during that time.

Aside from that, though, this is undoubtedly one of my UF favorites, a series I keep going back to whenever I need something familiar and comfortable, and yet exciting at the same time. Neill certainly knows what she’s doing, and I hope that her new series will be just as good.

  1. I am so glad this series is still going strong! I remember reading the first three books and loving it. I so need to pick the rest up.

  2. I haven't read any of these, but I've always been interested. That's good it's coming to an end, since things are beginning to lose steam, but that's awesome you still really love the series overall.

  4. At least she is ending it, some go on and on and on, and it goes bad

  5. This was a fun one to read. So much happens that it’s really hard to get it all out without giving into posting spoilers, so all I can say is that this is a must read.
Can’t wait to see what comes next for the Chicagoland Vampire gang!

  6. I'm gonna be sad to see the series end, but at the same time I agree that it's for the best, series that go on and on for many many books end up losing steam and going into weird places and I end up losing interest and I'd hate for that to happen to Ethan and Merit, because I loved them as a couple so much!

  7. This was one my first recommendato a when I was on a vampire binge after Twilight. But I never started this series. I know from experience that can series can plod along, but I find comfort in that sometimes especially when you want to return to something familiar. I hope to start this series soon though. Great review, Maja!

  8. Unfortunately, my love with this series stopped after Hard Bitten. It's not the gutsy move that Neill took but how she didn't explain (or at least satisfyingly for me) about the reasons surrounding the events after Hard Bitten. I'm glad this series still remains enjoyable for you.

  9. This is one of those series that has become intimidating for me due to sheer volume. I love the idea of sticking with one set of characters (I'm a Buffy The Vampire Slayer addict, a series of seven seasons, which I must have watched about 789 times!), and I realize that the potential for emotional investment is much higher in such a case, and yet ... holy cow, eleven books are just so many, lol! :) But maybe one day soon I'll conquer my fear and give this one a try. It seems a lot of people love these characters.

  10. I read the first book and it didn't wow me, but that's often the case with first books so I need to pick up the rest and give them a try before I forget everything!

  11. Book 11 and it's only been a year and a half??? Wow. Do they take time to breathe. I guess it is a good thing they are vamps. LOL I'm just on book 2 and haven't warmed up to Ethan yet. I'm curious as to what else she has in store for us with a new series.

  12. Huh, I had no idea that the series covers such a short time frame. That's something that tends to be a pet peeve of mine ... but I've heard great things about this series so maybe I should give it a try anyway.

  13. I agree about the time span! I really wish it wasn't one thing on top of another, one massive crisis right after the next. I always feel like they need a vacation!
