Review: Storm (Elemental, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer
Storm by Brigid Kemmerer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It should take me no more than three words to convince you to read this book. They are the same three words that convinced ME to read it, and I haven’t regretted it at all. Those three words are… are you ready?
Four hot brothers.
That’s all you need to know.
*sigh* Oh, okay. I suppose I should write a “proper” review. Here it goes:
Four Merrick brothers have a very strong connection to the elements: Michael controls earth, twins Gabriel and Nick control fire and air respectively, and the youngest, Chris, controls water. All four of them are far more powerful than they should be which causes the other Elementals to fear them and attack them at every opportunity. The brothers can’t use their elements to defend themselves because they’re all young and untrained and loss of control on their part could mean the loss of many innocent lives.
When two older boys ambush Chris and beat him almost to death, a girl from school comes to his rescue. She somehow chases them away and gets him home but Michael, his legal guardian since their parents died, practically chases her out of the house. Chris doesn’t really know her, even though she’s in some of his classes. He’s heard about her, though, everyone has. People say that she sleeps around with anyone who asks nicely enough. But Becca isn’t like that at all. She’s been through a lot and she’s just trying to keep her head down and avoid being noticed. Then, suddenly, she is in the middle of Chris’s drama, and a gorgeous new boy is showing a real interest in her.
You probably figured out from that last sentence that there is a love triangle in this book. In my humble opinion, there’s no such thing as a good/interesting love triangle, but I can tell you that this one is less painful than most. It made sense in a strange kind of way and it kept me in suspense because, unlike with other love triangles, I actually wasn’t sure which boy Becca would end up with.
Another thing worth mentioning is Brigid Kemmerer’s writing – it is much better than I expected when I first heard about this book. Her style doesn’t draw attention from the story itself, it is straightforward, clean and very easy to read.
Storm doesn’t end with a cliffhanger, but it has a pretty open ending. So many things are unresolved and I can’t wait for Gabriel’s book to be out. This is the type of not-quite-cliffhanger I can live with: everyone is safe, but there are a lot of questions that need answers.
If you are going to read Storm, definitely read the short story prequel first. It takes place about 4 years earlier, and it helped me understand why Michael is the way he is.
My recommendation: go read it. Just keep those smelling salts near – these boys will make you swoon!
Oh, and if by any chance you've read this already, I'm curious to hear which brother is your favorite. As long as it's not Michael. Michael is... not available. *g*

If I wasn't convinced enough by the thought of four hot brothers, then your review has definitely changed that. ;) I'm glad you enjoyed this Maja! Everyone seems to adore this book so I plan to get round to this as soon as I can. Love triangle or not, it sounds wonderfully entertaining. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Maja !
ReplyDeleteYou're actually the first person I know who's favorite brother is Michael. Sorry to say, but he's my favorite too ! :P Can we share him ? Pretty please ?
I haven't read Michael's novella, yet, but I'm sure to love it since Michael really intrigued me in Storm.
Even I'm not a huge fan of love triangles and I thought Brigid Kemmerer handled it really well. :)
Lovely review, Maja ! :D
P.S I think if your review only had the 3 words "Four Hot Brothers", everyone would have read it ! :D
Hah, sure, Nick, I can share. We'll make some sort of custody agreement. Defintiely read Michael's story! He was much younger, although just as angry and gorgeous!
DeleteOh, is that what smelling salts are for? For the swooning? I was getting to the end of Chasing Magic and feeling pretty nervous. (Off topic!)
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of neat that the girl rescues HIM at the beginning instead of the other way around. It's also cool that this is a male MC which you don't see very often. I completely agree with you about love triangles though - only rarely can I accept them as realistic and necessary. So often they're just used to heighten the drama. Lovely review today my dear!
Haha, I just thought you might need them for that rooftop scene! Just thinking about it makes me want to cry.
DeleteMaja, everyone loves this series! You had me at: Four Hot Brothers! I'm moving this up in my queue. Forget sleep, who needs it?!! ;)
ReplyDeleteFour hot brothers that alone would be enough to encourage me to pick this up, but it's great to know it's a lot more than that too! I have the prequel which I will try and start in the next few days and I can't wait to meet Michael too! ;)
ReplyDeleteGabriel's my favorite! I'm glad it's Michael you like, Maja! I don't think I can share Gabriel anymore. lol! I haven't read the prequel so I don't find Michael that appealing but that might change once I read it! Wahahaha!! >:D
ReplyDeleteI've read nothing but good review about this one, I'm really looking forward to it and hope to get to it soon...and I'll try not to fall for Michael lol. Awesome review :)
ReplyDeleteI love how you started this review Maja!!!!! Nick is my favorite! 1. he controls my element (if i could control elements) 2. He is the nicest and friendliest. 3. He's funny.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you loved this book as much as I did!!!!! Awesome Review!
I love how brave Becca was and hopefully will be in the sequels.
I already commented on Goodreads but I figure this hotness was worth another one. Hotness x 4 that is! :D
ReplyDeleteI love this book! I can't wait for Spark! Love the twins! =)
ReplyDeleteLOL yes!! I think that those three words should be able to convince any girl to read a book, even if they don't like reading x) And I'm so happy you're joining the I Heart Brigid Kemmerer fan club with me and the gallons of other Storm-lovers! I think that reading Michael's prequel definitely made me want to smack him less in the beginning of the book haha, but even though he's an amazing older brother, he's all yours, Maja -- Chris was my favourite for the fact that he was the sweetest of them all! :')
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely hug-worthy review, Maja! Are you or are you not super excited to get your hands on Spark?? I sure am! :D <3
I can't wait for Spark! great review
ReplyDelete"Four hot brothers.
ReplyDeleteThat’s all you need to know."
Yup, that really is! I'm sold. I know a few people who have told me the same thing about the LT, that it kind of makes sense here. I find that hard to believe, but I'll go with it. LOL
I don't think I've read a negative review of Storm and while that makes me excited, it also makes me wonder if this book is just receiving heaps of hype but, if you liked it then I am almost 100% sure that I will too! I'm really glad the writing is good and that the love triangle is bearable ;)
ReplyDeleteFour hot brothers.
ReplyDeletehaha That was my first thought when I heard about this book! Four hot brothers controlling the elements. Also curious about Becca and if she will end up with Chris. I did download the prequel when it was free. I'll have to get a taste and read it.
Awesome review! :D I'm glad you enjoyed this one. While I really like the elements, I was originally wary of this one--it just didn't seem like my kind of read. But I've honestly seen nothing other than glowing reviews, so I think I may have to give this one a try.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love when I can't figure out who the girl will end up with, because I think it makes it more believable that she wouldn't know, either. When it's painfully obvious, I just sit there and wonder why the girl is even bothering with the other boy.
AAAH! Blogger ATE my comment! Bad Blogger! Lol. Anyways, what I was saying is that my concerns about this book are pretty much what Vegan YA Nerds said above...I've been afraid that it can't POSSIBLY live up to all the hype! But I put a lot of stock in your opinion, Maja, so I'm relieved and excited that you enjoyed it! I've got it sitting on my Nook...now I just have to squeeze it into my reading schedule!
ReplyDeleteHahaha Maja, im choosing Michael! doesnt matter if hes available or not, he is my second marriage! *cougar alert* lol and sooooooo happy that you enjoyed this book! I want to know more of GAbriel though. hes a very very intriguing character. Great review Maja. x<3

So you liked it, eh? ;) Hehe. I admit I found the covers a bit off putting... but I'm SO going to have to read it! I'll order it soon for sure. I'll just have to keep my distance from Michael... or face the wrath of Maja!
ReplyDeleteGreat review :D
Four hot brothers? 'Nuff said. Sign.Me.Up. I did enjoy the rest of the review also! Another great review that has me running for the TBR list! :D
ReplyDeleteNever heard of this series nor author before, but I'm a sucker for hot brothers. This one sounds like it's right up my alley. I'm gonna hunt for the prequel and check it out. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL!! FABULOUS way to start your AMAZING review, Maja! x) You can definitely take Michael. He's too hot-blooded for me hehe! x) Have you read the prequel, Elemental? Michael is very cute there. :D
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I haven't read this book yet! Sometimes I'm a bit scared to read books with tons of 5 stars review, because I'm afraid to be disappointed. Hopefully I will start reading this during summer break soon! :)
AWESOME review, Maja. You had me at "Four hot brothers", really :P I will definitely read the prequel first and then Storm if it's better that way! I'm reading this as soon as I can. The brothers sound amazing and it's great to know that the love triangle is less painful, haha. (:
ReplyDeleteSo I realize that I'm DAYS BEHIND on your blog (and probably will be even worse this next week, darn real life), but I was so excited to see this one was a win for you! I honestly was wavering on it despite hearing only good things, but your word was the final one I needed to convince me I need to try it. No cliff hanger and a less-painful-than-normal love triangle may be what I need to make it through. :P
ReplyDeleteBrigid Kemmerer's STORM, book one in her "Elemental" series delivers a terrific storyline that kept me turning the pages and wanting more. Imagine teenagers empowered with the ability to command the elements at will, as members of a secret society, although not so secret that there are also those whose responsibility it is to destroy as they see fit; however factored into this equation is also a wild card that can pull them all together. A chance encounter that carries with it a feeling of dread you can feel in the pit of your stomach, of being in the wrong place at the wrong time sets in motion a chain reaction with the strength of a summer thunderstorm that has Becca Chandler wondering why she ever decided to take a class in self-defense. A crazy class that once finished has left her walking through the deserted high school parking lot just in time to witness someone being beat to pieces! Torn by thoughts of whether she should just walk away and hope someone else will come along and save the poor guy or try to help? Her first class today did not leave her with any insight to draw on in a battle of three against one. In the distance as realization strikes as to who the victim is Becca wonders what is Chris Merrick, one of her classmates doing out here by himself, and for that matter where were his older brothers, the hot twins? Left with no choice, Becca will need to take matters into her own hands and use the only weapon at her disposal to ensure an end to the persistent battering Chris is taking; she rushes them with her car hoping this will be the last she sees of them! Standing alone beside her car as the rain pours down, soaking her to the skin she has a feeling this is only the beginning.
ReplyDeleteFour hot brothers? Yeah, you had me there. But seriously this book sounds great. I have heard so many good things about this book, so I'm really excited to read it!
ReplyDeleteAre each of the books about a different brother, but kind of going along with the same story? :P
Great review!
