Out of The EasyAuthor: Ruta Sepetys

Publisher: Philomel Books
Hardcover, 352 pages
Buy: The Book Depository

Reading Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys lead me to conclude that there aren’t enough YA books set in a) the 1950’s and b) New Orleans. And yet, only a writer of Sepetys’ skill and confidence could have successfully written such a story. Out of the Easy is a murder mystery first, a coming of age story second, and about twenty other things in between. It is a story of great complexity, and yet paradoxically, it is also a very simple one.

With Out of the Easy, Sepetys confirmed that she’s not merely a writer of YA historical fiction, but that she’s a Writer and that she measures up to the very best. She is able to make her authorial voice completely invisible, thus allowing her characters to fully form and take center stage.

Out of the Easy rose from its pages to unfold right in front of my eyes, more like a play than anything else. I wasn’t a reader, not exactly - Sepetys had allowed me to become a spectator instead. All I had to do was sit back and watch as the setting materialized in front of me into a full audio-visual and olfactory experience.

The characters weren’t far behind. As soon as Josie Moraine spoke her first sentence (“My mother’s a prostitute.”), I knew we were going to get along, and we did. Each of us has wanted to be someone else somewhere else at least once in our lives, but for Josie, it’s a matter of survival. All she ever wanted was to be normal, to be able to live and learn like everyone else, without her mother’s constant malicious meddling. Josie’s voice was clear as bell, and she spoke to me until her problems became my problems and her heartache my heartache as well.

Willie said normal was boring and that I should be grateful that I had a touch of spice. She said no one cared about boring people, and when they died, they were forgotten, like something that slips behind the dresser. Sometimes I wanted to slip behind the dresser. Being normal sounded perfectly wonderful.

But Josie was not alone – each of the characters was so unique, so alive and vibrant – that they completely took over the story and left their author far behind. Or so it seemed.

This is where Ruta Sepetys’ skill truly shows. Her writing style is so clear, so completely transparent that it never gets in the way of the story. This ability (or rather a choice) makes even the characters’ emotions seem more genuine, not forced or manipulated, but as real as yours or mine.

It’s best that you go into this book knowing as little as possible, not because it hides some staggering surprise, but because its beauty is almost impossible to put into words. The only way is to experience everything for yourself, and if you ask me, that’s exactly what you should do.

  1. This sounds completely wholesome and fabulous! I've been craving for a well written murder mystery for quite a while! And coming of age elements are ALWAYS awesome. Great review, Maja :)

  2. Oh, Maja. This review is perfect! I loved this book, too (and it was my first Sepetys novel), and you've reflected my own feelings here so well. I completely agree about Josie and the writing. Josie, especially, surprised me, as I wasn't sure if I was going to like her at first. I definitely plan to make a start on Between Shades of Grey soon.

  4. I agree completely! It really is best to just experience this one as it's so beautifully written and poignant. I know I enjoyed this novel more than Sepetys's debut, probably because I felt that instant connection with Josie and all the other people in her life as well. Lovely review, Maja - I can't help but think this is the best way to write one for this book.<3

  5. The 50's is an unusual time for YA books to be set in -- I don't think I've read any set then. *thinks* Josie sounds like a fantastic character! I think I'd get along well with her, too.

  6. "All I had to do was sit back and watch as the setting materialized in front of me into a full audio-visual and olfactory experience."

LOVE THAT MAJA!!! I've read a couple books where I've felt exactly what you described above, and those always end up being my very favorite books. Clearly, I'm missing out having not read anything by Ruta, and I need to remedy that immediately. Beautiful, beautiful review my friend! You never fail to make me want to pick up a book you've loved:)

  9. So glad you reviewed this Maja, I have seriously contemplated buying it, but was hesitant. I love when the author allows you to slip into the story. Wonderful review.

  11. Wonderful review, Maja. I have been wanting to check out this author for awhile but I couldn't bring myself to read Shades of Gray. I think this read would be a much better fit for me. I just don't do a lot of angsty gut rendering reads. You know how fond of lovely writing I am as well. Too bad I got turned down for an ARC now it will be awhile before I can read this. Enjoy your weekend!

  12. Incredible review. :) I'm really going to have to pick this one up, I'm not sure why that hasn't happened yet. Shades of Gray was amazing and heartbreaking but she's such an amazing writer.

  13. I was so bummed when I didn't get to my ARC copy of this in time from NG. I haven't read anything by the author yet but I've heard such good things about her. Your 5 star rating and awesome review definitely puts this book in my high priority list of need to read ASAP. I love books where you can experience and be present than just an outside observer. Really looking forward to reading this!

  14. I SO need to get a hold of this book. I loved Between Shades of Gray! So, I already know I enjoy her writing in historical events. Oh you have shown me how beautiful this book must be and I do want to experience it myself! Pushing the book up the wishlist!

  15. This is such a beautiful review of a stunning book. I love when you talk about how Sepetys characters come alive in her book, and that that as a reader your focus was on them instead of her voice. Well said! I had forgotten how much I've missed well researched historical fiction until I read this book, and I agree this is such a fascinating city in a great time period. I met Sepetys earlier this month and she was just as amazing as her book. I think I could have sat at her feet for hours.

  16. Maja, your reviews. <3
I seriously loved Ruta's debut novel, so there's no exaggeration when I say that I NEED this book in my hands. I actually have no idea why I haven't devoured this book yet. Ruta's characters are always able to stand out in one way or another. I'm so glad that you were able to connect with Josie so quickly! She seems like a very likeable character. I love Ruta's writing as well, and I'll definitely be picking this one up soon! Thanks for the lovely review, Maja! :)

  18. This review makes me NEED to read this book right now! I completely agree that there aren't enough YA's set in New Orleans -- I really love that city. I just bought this book the other day and now I'm going to move it to the top of my TBR list. Really beautiful and fabulous review!

  20. I am so in love with this book, the time, the place, Josie's voice. "Out of the Easy rose from its pages to unfold right in front of my eyes, more like a play than anything else. I wasn’t a reader, not exactly - Sepetys had allowed me to become a spectator instead." This is EXACTLY how I felt, wonderfully put! I never thought Ruta could outdo herself after Between Shades of Gray, but she absolutely has. This is an amazing, unforgettable story. Definitely going on the re-read shelf.

Brilliant review, Maja! I will send people over here for convincing if they're on the fence about reading this book. :-)

  21. I keep hearing great things about this one, so I feel like I should definitely give it a try. I actually still need to read Between Shades of Grey, even though it's waiting for me on my bookcase!

  22. Between Shades of Grey is still siting on my self waiting to be read! However, I definitely want to read this as well! Great review!

  23. Learning that this book was based in the 1950's would have actually been enough to stop me reading even the blurb, I'm not too big a fan of books based in the past. But you make it sound so wonderful. Fantastic review Maja :)

  24. I really enjoy historical YA and don't understand why there were so few of them the past year. Hopefully a couple of good ones will bring the genre back.

  25. I love a New Orleans setting but I'm not a historical reader so I usually avoid anything before the 80s. I've seen a lot of good things about this one though so I might try it sometime.

  26. I am so glad you gave this book such high rating, Maja! I wanted to read it, but it had such a wide range of reviews from disappointing to good, I didn't know if I like it. Our taste is very similar for books, so I hope I enjoy it just as much! ;) thank you for such great review!

  27. I REALLY need to get my hands on this one. I am not a historical fiction fan but I think I could totally deal with the '50's and the characters sound so great. I have been seeing nothing but praise for this book, loved your review!

  28. Oh boy - you completely SOLD this one to me, Maja!! It is a travesty that I haven't read Between Shades of Grey yet, and now I can add this one to the list, too. I've always had a fascination with the French Quarter in New Orleans and it just adds to the coolness of it that it is set in 1950s. I REALLY love your description of this one as more of a experience for a spectator rather than just a book you read. This sounds FANTASTIC!!

  29. I can sympathize with Josie's feeling of wanting boring and normal. I've felt that way a number of times in my life. This sounds like a fabulous story, but the mother sounds like an horror. I hope everything worked out for Josie. Wonderful review Maja. :)

  30. I've heard such great things about both of Sepetys' novels so I'm a little embarrassed that I haven't read either of them, especially since I love historical fiction. I'm hoping to change that soon though. I love that the author not only made her MC come alive but did so just as well with the secondary characters.

  31. Yep yep, completely agree. I actually wanted a little more of the world-building for 1950s New Orleans but thought that Sepetys did a near-brilliant job with characterization otherwise. This makes me want to go back to her first novel and give it another try.

  32. YES! Your review hits on everything that makes this book so great. I was unexpectedly, pleasantly blown away. I ended up crying at Starbucks as I finished it. New Orleans was so vivid, it really was a character in the book. Great, great review, Maja.

  33. I love a book where you don't even have to try to get into it because thanks to the authors mad skillz, you're immersed from the very beginning.

I am SO glad this is good because I have been lusting after it ever since I saw the cover

  34. I haven't read a book by Sepetys yet, but I'm looking forward to picking one up, especially this one. I'm intrigued by the setting of the 50s in history, so this should be exciting.

Particularly when you have such high praise for her talents as an author. She certainly sounds fabulous! :)

  35. I know precisely what you mean about sitting back and observing this book rather than just reading it. I'm so glad to see you loved it, and yes, there do need to be more books in this time and place, but this one spectacularly stands alone.

  36. This review is wonderful! You've really not mentioned too much about the actual book, yet you've also managed to convey in me a great desire to go and pick up Sepetys' sophomore novel. I recently read Between Shades of Gray and really loved it, so I can't imagine not feeling similarly about Out of the Easy (although I will admit that neither the time period and setting really appeal to me). I'm glad you enjoyed this so much, Maja and I can't wait to experience the story for myself!
