The Hidden Legacy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews continues as Nevada and Rogan navigate a world where magic is the norm…and their relationship burns hot
Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she's used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family's detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor "Mad" Rogan.
Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada’s “talent.” But there’s no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice …

White Hot, the long awaited and breathlessly anticipated second book in Ilona Andrews’ Hidden Legacy series, was worth every second of the agonizing wait.

Nevada is once again tangled up in a case that’s far too big for her small investigative agency, but her big heart and her code of honor won’t allow her to turn away from those who have no place else to go. This time, she is hired by Cornelius Harrison from House Harrison to investigate the murder of his wife Nari and three other lawyers. Since Nari was working for a different House, the circumstances of her death are suspicious at best, and the official version of events is obviously a blatant lie.

As Nevada digs deeper into the deaths of four lawyers, a cooperation with Connor ‘Mad’ Rogan becomes inevitable. After a blunt and insulting offer by Rogan, they haven’t had any contact in a while, but their chemistry is still off the charts. Nevada is trying to protect herself from the emotional hurricane, but it’s hard to resist someone as honest, dark and intense as Connor. I loved the development of their relationship in this book. It felt natural and smooth, even with a few inevitable setbacks.

On an even more personal front, Nevada is forced to reveal more of her powers to save a little girl from a kidnapper. Even with all the precautions, it’s a matter of time before more sinister members of Huston’s magical society find their way to her family. If the Baylors are to survive the upcoming danger, they must have a game plan, which might include being open about their abilities, something they’ve been trying to avoid at all costs. Speaking of abilities, in White Hot we finally learn more, not just about Nevada, but about her sisters and her family’s history as well. It’s both bigger and more frightening than I could have imagined (and isn’t it always with Ilona and Gordon), but Nevada is more than up to the task.

The fantastic husband-and-wife writing team provided us with another example of genre fiction at its best. It truly doesn’t pay to underestimate what they do, especially since they keep getting better with each new book – which is no small feat when you’re already the best. Detailed, imaginative, immersive, exceptional, well researched, romantic and fabulously written are just some of the words that can be used to describe their latest work. It’s hard to be impressed when you’ve already been dazzled so many times by someone’s work, but I am once again amazed by their ability to create these worlds that will become second homes for so many of us.
