Nocturnal Quotes: Blackout

Hello, nocturnal librarians!

I hope you're having a fabulous weekend. It's all work work work for me these days, but fortunately, it's time for yet another Nocturnal Quotes post, and I chose an all-time favorite once again.

This week, we have a poem (or part of it) written by Magdalene Grace Garcia, a character from Mira Grant's fantastic Newsflesh trilogy. That trilogy is my heart and soul, I'm telling you, and if you haven't read it yet, please do so as soon as you can.

Beautiful, isn't it? Unfortunately, the whole poem was too long to use for the quote, but here it is anyway. I just can't get over how wonderful it is. Seanan McGuire is brilliant.

Because we chose to tell the truth
(The cool of age, the rage of youth)
And stand against the lies of old
(The whispers soft, the tales untold)
We find ourselves the walking dead
(The loves unkept, the words unsaid)
And in the crypt of all we've known
(The broken blade, the breaking stone)
We know that we were in the right
(The coming dawn, the ending night).
So here is when we stop the lies.
The time is come. We have to Rise.

And here's another one of Magdalene's poems, this time from Deadline:

The sweetest summer gift of all
Is knowing spring gives way to fall
And when the winds of winter call,
We’ll answer as we must.
Persephone chose to descend
Into the night that has no end,
In Hades’ hands she goes to spend
Her nights amid the dust.
For Hades holds his loved ones dear,
Away from life, away from fear,
And so when death is drawing near,
In Hades’ hands we trust.

- From Dandelion Mine, the blog of Magdalene Grace Garcia, June 23, 2041

Only Seanan could publish a combination of zombies and excellent poetry and not only get away with it, but get nominated for several Hugo awards as well.

Once again, thank you to my gorgeous sister-in-law, the brilliant mind behind Le Non Design, for doing these for me every week.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone. Rise up while you can!

  7. I've been tempted to read thee books for ages. I always see them as I roam the Sci-Fi section in my local bookshop, so I might try this out soon. I do love myself a good zombie book and these quotes and poetry confirm it. Lovely post! :)
