Tessa is a Variant with extraordinary abilities. She could be a hero, but all she wants to do is fall in love ...
Tessa is a Variant, able to absorb the DNA of anyone she touches and mimic their appearance. Shunned by her family, she's spent the last two years with the Forces with Extraordinary Abilities, a secret branch of the FBI. There she trains with other Variants, such as long-term crush Alec, who each have their own extraordinary ability.
When a serial killer rocks a small town in Oregon, Tessa is given a mission: she must impersonate Madison, a local teen, to find the killer before he strikes again. Tessa hates everything about being an impostor - the stress, the danger, the deceit - but loves playing the role of a normal girl. As Madison, she finds friends, romance, and the kind of loving family she'd do anything to keep.
Amid action, suspense, and a ticking clock, this super-human comes to a very human conclusion: even a girl who can look like anyone struggles the most with being herself.

If Veronica Mars was in X-men… the world would rejoice… and the world has every reason to because that description, taken from the back cover of the UK edition of Impostor, is actually pretty accurate.

Tessa is a Variant, a human with the ability to become anyone she’s ever touched. She was taken in by a secret branch of the FBI and trained to use this power in a way that benefits the government. So when a serial killer’s victim doesn’t die right away, Tessa has to become her, become a bait for this sadistic murderer.

For Tessa, who’s never known the warmth of a family, becoming Madison even for a short time was exceptionally difficult. Experiencing a parent’s unconditional love, all the hope and kindness Madison’s parents gave her when they thought she was their miraculously recovered daughter, made her want to abandon her cold life and become Madison forever. The pain she experienced while she was Madison and when she was forced to turn her back on Madison’s life was came across very clearly. While all the other characters were somewhat underdeveloped, Tessa was extraordinarily well done.

Although I’m quite fond of this book as a whole, romance is by far my least favorite part. Alec is your typical overbearing love interest. He tends to suffocate Tessa with his overprotectiveness, but at the same time, he wishes to keep her at arm’s length, for reasons seemingly known to everyone but Tessa herself. He seems to genuinely care for Tessa, yet he refuses to treat her like an equal, which makes him less than desirable in my eyes.

I’m very excited about the upcoming sequel. I don’t trust Alec in the least – it’s quite obvious that he’s hiding something big, and discovering what might just break poor Tessa. In fact, there’s not a single trustworthy person around her, except maybe Madison’s twin brother. One thing is certain: I’ll be following Tessa’s adventures very closely.

  1. I remember seeing the cover for this book around a lot - along with the author's name, actually - but not too much about the actual book itself, strangely enough. Nevertheless, I'm glad to have finally learned more about it from you, Maja. I think I'll be waiting to see how the sequel to this shapes up, only because Alec seems like the type of love interest I am absolutely tired of these days. Thanks for such an honest and helpful review, Maja! :)

  2. Oooo I love the sound of this book! Although the type of romance is somewhat annoying, I can potentially overlook that flaw as long as the plot and characterization make up for it. Thanks for the review Maja and I will make sure to check this one out :)

  3. I was gonna read this one because I got it for review, but then I got suffocated under a new pile of books and totally forgot about this one. Will reconsider and push it back up this list! Alec seems like a love interest I would hate though.

    Lovely review! <33

  4. The world would DEFINITELY rejoice with such a pairing. I like that no one is trustworthy -- I can see you giving everyone the side eye!

  5. The love interest is scaring me away. YA and I have a complicated relationship and we recently hit a rocky patch. I love the idea behind the book (secret FBI branches, right up my alley) but bad love interests set off all my alarms. Overbearing, overprotective dudes are not hot. Also since she works for the FBI, I am guessing she is more capable of protecting herself than he probably is :P

On an unrelated note... I really should watch Veronica Mars. Everyone loves it.

    Great Review, Maja! :)

  6. Would you believe I never watched Veronica Mars? I know, I know, I suck. :P

This does sound like a good read though, glad you are looking forward to the sequel.

    Happy Friday Maja!

  7. Yep, I really loved Tessa and her journey. It was very irritating seeing how everyone kept treating her like a weapon/tool and not bothering to tell her anything, and how they didn't seem to understand how hard it was to take over someone else's life.

I cannot wait till book 2! I keep hoping that Alec will learn to treat Tessa as an equal!

  8. So glad you enjoyed this one overall Maja! I was a fan of the romance because I'm a sucker for the friends to lovers trope, but I agree that Alec is clearly hiding something big and I worry for Tessa moving forward. *bites nails* I loved Tessa so much though, and I can't wait to watch her grown and continue coming into her own in the next book. Fabulous review:)

  10. Hadn't heard of this one, but glad that it's now on my radar. I love X-men type stories with superpowers and FBI and all that comes along with it. Loved the review. :)

  11. Hey Maja! I really liked this book too. Loved the premise and it lived up to the plot as well. X men meets Veronica Mars- perfect description. How excited are you for the VM movie? :)

  12. I miss Veronica Mars! That combination of VM & X-Men definitely piques my interest. I do hate lack of communication in a romance, but it sounds like the story besides that was really good. I think I'll wait on your reaction to the next book before I pick this one up, though. Wonderful review, Maja! :)

  13. Fantastic review, as always! I hadn't heard of this before so thanks for bringing it to my attention. I love the cover! It's the shame the romance didn't work out for you. It's tiring when the love interest is just like the others and I can see why the overprotectiveness could get annoying. Tessa sounds like an interesting character though, I hope you enjoy the sequel :)

    Thanks for sharing, Maja!

  15. I think I liked the US hardback cover better than this one, but I still like it. I didn't love the love interest, but didn't hate it either. I think I liked him more than you did, but yes, I see trouble around the corner with the company they "trust". I'm curious where it heads. My problem with the novel had to do with the scars and other environmental "defects". Those aren't written on the DNA so how did she mimic them? Anyway... can't wait for the sequel.

  16. Lol, Veronica would kick.ass in xmen

  17. I like the US cover better, but the UK marketing copy is where it's at! Veronica Mars/X-men gives me excited grabby hands and I've already read it. I really need to re-read this before the next book, b/c I'm having total book amnesia about where they ended things in book one. I was a fan of the romance (like Jenny I'm a sucker for friends-to-lovers), but I do definitely remember something (besides Alec's girlfriend) that kept Tessa and Alec apart. I think their boss is behind it or involved in some way. Can't wait to find out what it is, but I am definitely worried about Tessa's feelings in book two. Lovely review!

  18. I didn't know this one but your mention of Veronica Mars is intriguing. But maybe I'll wait for you to read book 2 like that I'll be sure. thanks for the review!

  19. Gah for overbearing love interests, shame. The plot on the other hand does sound different.

  20. Now her ability sounds like something amazing. I mean imagine you can become anyone you ever touched. Wow that would be great. It sounds truly interesting. Too bad the romance wasn't as good as the whole idea, but anyhow I'm really curious right now. Great review, Maja :)

  22. Sold. Veronica Mars meets X-Men?? YES PLEASE. :)

  23. I'm glad to hear you liked this book more than I did :)

  24. Maybe it's good to not like Alec too much, it sounds like he might not be a good guy? Or not all good? I like the concept of this one, I might have to pick it up!

  25. Ohh this sounds really good. I've been wanting to read Impostor for quite a while now. I need Veronica Mars back in my life haha and I really do hope that Tessa finds a more appropriate love interest, because I need a strong and believable romance in a book. Great review! Thanks for sharing your thoughts:)
