I Hunt Killers introduced the world to Jasper (Jazz) Dent, the son of the world's most infamous serial killer. When a desperate New York City detective comes knocking on Jazz's door asking for help with a new case, Jazz can't say no. The Hat-Dog Killer has the Big Apple - and its police force running scared with no leads. So Jazz and his girlfriend, Connie, hop on a plane to the big city and get swept up in a killer's murderous game. Meanwhile, Jazz's dad, Billy, is watching... and waiting.
Okay, time to fess up, people! Did someone steal the last hour of my audiobook? If it was you, please give it back. I like my books to have an actual ending, thank you very much.
Oh, Barry Lyga, whatever did we do to you? Apparently one cliffhanger wasn’t bad enough so Lyga decided to leave us with three – one on Jazz’s side of things, one on Connie’s and one on Howie’s – just to be on the safe side. While that might work for most people (book three will probably break some record in number of pre-orders), for me, that sort of thing is counterproductive. I’m not saying I won’t read it eventually, but I’m far less enthusiastic about it.
Writing this review without spoilers for either of the book is tricky, but I’ll do my best. After his success with the Impressionist, Jazz is called to New York to help catch a new, even more vicious serial killer. Obviously this is a very unlikely scenario, but I had no trouble suspending disbelief and enjoying this story for what it was.
Our Jazz grew up so much! Out of Lobo’s Nod and playing with the big boys, he suddenly started acting like a big boy himself. There’s so much he still needs to learn about his past and the pressure is tremendous, but he handles it all with courage. With Billy out, Jazz feels that each new death will somehow be his fault. It’s a great burden for a 17-year-old and I think Lyga handled the damages to his psyche perfectly.
In Game, disappointment came from a very unexpected direction – my former favorite, Connie. The girl gave a whole new meaning to the words ‘too stupid to live’. While I admire her loyalty and her strength, due to some of her choices in this book, my estimate of her intelligence dropped by about 70%. Clearly, when you start getting creepy instructions from a blocked number, the smart thing to do is follow them, even knowing they probably come from a serial killer. She kept making reckless and selfish decisions, and by the end, I wanted someone to kill her, just to show her that she’s way out of her league. I can be mean like that sometimes.
Howie, of course, couldn’t stop being his usual hilarious self even if he wanted to. He took Connie’s place as my favorite character in a heartbeat. Like her, he is unflinchingly loyal, but he doesn’t mind staying in the background in the least. His attempts to seduce Jazz’s aunt Samantha balanced things out a bit for me.
I was tempted to buy this the day it came out, but after a great experience with the I Hunt Killers audiobook, I decided to wait for my Audible credit and get this one in audio format too. I am SO glad I did. Charlie Thurston is a fabulous narrator. He brings a dose of humor to all the right moments using nothing more than the cadence of his voice. He makes Billy sound frightening, but also a bit funny, and his voice for grandma is simply fantastic. If I do decide to read the third book, it will be on audio yet again.
Wonderful review, Maja. I've never tried audio books before so I can't relate to the experience. I love this series but not so excited about this one for some reason. A little less so now after reading about Connie. Whelp.
ReplyDeleteToday seems to be a day of reading reviews for books that I really need to start already. This series sounds utterly fantastic Maja, Jazz and Howie sounds like brilliant characters! I'm glad that despite having some issues you are still eager to read the third book. Lovely review! :)
ReplyDeleteI feel like this is the series I'll be starting as audio after Graceling trilogy. I'm glad the narrator was awesome. Haha, cliffhangers suck. :|
ReplyDeleteFantastic review, Maja! <33
Three cliffhangers Maja! Now that is incredibly frustrating. This series isn't for me anyway because I'm a giant wimp and can't really deal with gore of any kind, but knowing I would face three cliffhangers at the end of this one would make me pass on it anyway. At least until book 3 was already out. It's a shame about Connie too, especially since she was a favorite previously. Hopefully she redeems herself in the next one!
ReplyDeleteThree Cliffhangers would drive me nuts, since I am not a fan of them to begin with :( at least you enjoyed the book regardless. Glad to hear Jazz grew in this one. I remember your review of the first book I haven't been in a mood for something like this lately but maybe eventually I will be.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow 13 hours is a long audio! Goodness, I am not sure what to think about not one but THREE cliffhangers.
ReplyDeleteYikes! I think this one would be best left to read until the next comes out.
Great review!
OH NO! I love Connie! *sobs* I hate when strong protagonists simply fall off a cliff into a sea of stupidity. Gah. Also, the three cliffhangers have me quaking in my shoes - I won't be reading this until Book 3 is out for sure. Still, I'll glad you still managed to like this and YAY for Howie! :) Fantastic review, Maja - I'll keep in mind to try this one on audio.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm not reading this series now until book 3. GAH! I hate that! 3 cliffies??? I'm like you, that so makes me less enthused about getting the next book. I hate those kind of ploys. A good book will sell w/o the cliffie! Okay, enough about that. Oh and I also hate it when the girl (usually) becomes TSTL. Ugh. Still, you seemed to enjoy it, so that makes me very curious.
ReplyDeleteI do think I will have to try that narrator. You have so convinced me of that! :)
What the heck is up with THREE cliffies?!? Mental torture. That's all I can think. But, of course, it IS Barry Lyga. He likes that kind of torture.
ReplyDeleteMaja, I actually listened to I Hunt Killers on audio and I have to agree with you that Charlie is a FABULOUS narrator. I should really pick up Game, because THREE CLIFFHANGERS? How is that even possible?! You've got me extremely interested in picking it up now. Connie wasn't a FAVORITE of mine, but it's a shame that she becomes a girl that isn't so intelligent. I love Howie! <3 He is really a truly loyal friend, and I'm quite excited to hear how he seduces Jazz's aunt.. Anyhow, lovely review, I can't wait to go grab my own audiobook of Game!
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing pretty mixed reviews for this one which is the reason I'm waiting until book three before I start.
ReplyDeleteI hate those kinds of endings. Hope you enjoy the next one. :)
ReplyDeleteAaah I hate it when books feel unfinished! It completely ruins the experience for me, even if the rest of the book was spectacular. It sucks that you were disappointed by your former favourite character, but YAY for the hilarious and loyal Howie! Lovely review, Maja! These books seem really interesting. <3 x
ReplyDeleteOkay, I skimmed through the meat part of this review because I haven't read the first one, but I did see cliffhanger and boo at that! But on the plus side is that you like the narrator for the audiobook. I've become so attached to audiobooks lately! The narrator makes such a hug different. I'll have to listen to the first one! :)
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear this is so great on audio. I'm always looking for my next good audio. :) I'm thinking I'll read this one closer to the release of book 3 because... 3 cliffhangers? No thanks. Great review! :)
ReplyDeleteThe ending of this sounds like a nightmare. I never felt particularly drawn to I Hunt Killers, and you just sealed the deal of me never picking them up. Thanks for your honest review Maja :)
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to focus enough to get through an audiobook - I just can't sit still and listen. Maybe I like turning pages, keeping my hands (and eyeballs) busy? :) Hmm..
ReplyDeleteI've read I Hunt Killers and only got about halfway through The Game so far. I've read these (or tried to read these) one after another, without the long waiting period between releases, and so I must say I found The Game a bit repetitive. The same thrills, the same tricks to build tension, etc. Maybe it's just me, or maybe I should've given it a couple of weeks before reaching for the sequel, but I just couldn't get into it. I loved the first book and I'm sure I'll love The Game when I'll finally get around to picking it up again, but so far I wasn't very impressed..
And gosh, I strongly dislike cliffhangers! Grrr!!!
Great review! <3
Awesome review Maja and our remarks about the ending had me giggling. I enjoyed book one and will probably read this..just closer to the release of book three.lol
ReplyDeleteTHREE cliffhangers? I've just about had enough of those, and I certainly don't want to triple the pain. Mary just wrote an awesome post likening cliffies to a rash, and I have to agree. :-) Glad you enjoyed the audio in spite of the ending. I adore Howie and Connie, but I think Howie slightly edges her out because he makes me laugh more often. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the first book yet, and I've had it for over a year now, but I think I might give both of these a try on audio. I'm slowly starting to appreciate audiobooks now, even though it'll always be my least favorite format. The ending of this one really doesn't sound like fun though! Maybe I should wait until they're all released. Wonderful review, Maja. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I remember hearing about this book a while ago but never looked into it. It sounds brilliant :) It is a shame Connie disappointed you, it is annoying when favourite characters make stupid decisions. Cliffhangers are so cruel, too! Thanks for sharing, Maja :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I really enjoyed reading this one in print but I don't think I would have enjoyed listening to it.
ReplyDelete-Scott Reads It!
I haven't read this series yet, and haven't had a strong urge to do so. Cliffhangers like that just make me angry. For now I'm glad this is a series ice skipped so far.
ReplyDeleteI loved the I Hunt Killers audio and was so looking forward to enjoying this one, but ugh... more cliffhangers?!?! I thought Lyga did such an awesome job with Jas' damaged character and the relationships between all the characters in the first book. I probably will still listen to this audio but I really dislike cliffhangers. :(
ReplyDeleteAAAAAAAAA. I am so glad I'm not the only one who thought Connie went from kick-ass to dumb-ass in this book. Thank you!! Also I was irrevocably traumatized by every scene Howie hit on Sam. Is that just me? It felt like I walked in on my brother doing some form of pole dance.. *shudder*
