First in a new romance series: It’s the roaring twenties, and San Francisco is a hotbed of illegal boozing, raw lust, and black magic. The fog-covered Bay Area can be an intoxicating scene, particularly when you specialize in spirits…
There’s a big curse in little Chinatown...and it’s not prohibition.
Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown’s illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act.
Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who’s more comfortable with guns than ghosts—unfortunately for him, he’s the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida’s supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her...
On the hunt for the curseworker responsible for the hex, Aida and Winter become drunk on passion. And the closer they become, the more they realize they have ghosts of their own to exorcise…
You may or may not know that I avoid paranormal romance like the plague. I’ve stated on several occasions that it gives me severe allergies. But this is Jenn Bennett we’re talking about – I’d read just about anything if it had her name on it. And wow, did I make the right decision here.

As a huge fan of Bennett’s Arcadia Bell series, I went into this book hoping for unique characters and a well-built world. Witty, entertaining and hot as sin, Bitter Spirits was everything I’ve come to expect from Jenn Bennett, and then some. There’s no better place and no better time for two clever, flirtatious characters than San Francisco during the prohibition era, and when one your protagonist is a bootlegger, the danger implied is enough to make your heart beat faster.

Bennett knows how to write romances her readers can invest everything into. Her characters are never archetypal, they’re built to the finest details, and so are their relationships. It was so easy to love these two and want to see them together. Even when they were being difficult and pigheaded, it wasn’t hard to stay on their side and hope for the best.

It helped that they are, individually, very impressive characters. Aida Palmer is a medium, and she’s the real deal. She travels from town to town performing her show in clubs. She can both summon and banish spirits and she is no weakling. She is a modern, independent woman, opinionated and strong. Winter Magnusson is a businessman with a horrible, traumatic past. Having lost his family in an accident, he is determined never to marry again. They are attracted to each other from the start, but neither is in the position to hope for something permanent, at least not at first.

However, Bitter Spirits is not all about the romance. The paranormal mystery Aida and Winter end up investigating is not just something carelessly thrown together as a catalyst for the romance. It is thought through and exciting and it explores Chinese culture to a certain extent. Honestly, what more could one wish for?

In a typical PNR fashion, the second book will focus on Winter’s brother, the archaeologist, and his romantic interest. According to Jenn, there will eventually be a third book featuring Winter’s sister and his most trusted employee and friend. All I can say to that is: yes, please!

  1. Oooo romance happened in SF Chinatown? This is one I must have. I love slowly brewed romance and this sounds quite fitting. I'm really curious about the paranormal investigations they are having too since you mentioned they explored Chinese culture. I will have to see if they are accurate interpretations :P As always, love your review Maja.

I wasn't sure about this one -- I do like PNRs but I can be really picky about them, too. Looks like I need to check it out!

  5. I'm so excited for this one! Having reading the Arcadia Bell Series I'm officially a fan of this author and I love historical fiction infused with elements of romance, mystery, and the paranormal. It always makes for such an enriching reading experience, so I'll have to find a copy of this soon! Fantastic review, Maja - I just loved this one! :)

  6. I am not familiar with this author nor of her series. But you, my dear, is such a marketing machine! I wouldn't be surprised if I end up finding a copy of this and the Arcadia Bell series.

Also, I am not a huge paranormal reader myself. So this could be the year of finding new genres.

  7. Sounds like a very interesting read, with the paranormal angle and the dose of Chinese culture! One to add to the TBR list I think!
    Thanks for the review Maja!

  9. I am kind of sad that the second book will focus on his brother and not on the couple I've grown to love. Seriously. After all their pigheadedness they finally get to be together. I wish I could see some of their relationship in the aftermath (the epilogue was NOT enough).
I AM SO EXCITED about Bo's book. I am not sold on Astrid (she could be annoying) but Bo, Bo was adorable. Plus it's set in during the depression! Kind of excited to see how she'll pull that off.

    Great Review Maja! :)

  12. I haven't read any Jenn Bennet's books before but they oddly remind me of The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger. I really enjoyed the Paranormal Romance there and the setting it was in. So I think this one is right up my league. :) Lovely review Maja. :)

  13. I actually requested this one based on your love for her series and the fact that you posted this as a WoW at some point, and I'm so glad I did Maja! I'm a fan of paranormal romance in general, but this was a particularly fabulous story I thought and I just adored Aida and Winter. I'm beside myself with happiness that Winter's sister and a certain employee are going to get a story, I was so hoping that would be the case!

  17. I totally agree with you! I don't read a lot of PNR books, well only when I receive some without asking but when I saw this one and because well you know it's Jenn, I knew I would love it and I really really loved it! Can't wait for more now!

  19. I was supposed to get this one for review, but I think with all the holiday hoopla, I got forgotten... *cries uncontrollably* Seriously, so bummed that I missed out on the reviewing, but I'm SO going to pick up this book. Love her Arcadia Bell series and am so glad to see she puts in the same magic to her characters in this book as well.

  20. I am so excited about this one. I am reading it for FIre and Ice. I am like you, I enjoy a good PNR but I don't like them over the top if that makes sense. I think I will get along with this just fine except I don't like that eventually a book three line.

  22. I love hearing that there is a mystery that isn't just used to throw the couple into romantic scenarios. I'm not big on pnr either, but I do find it to be fun every now and then. Sounds like Bitter Spirits would be a good choice for my once in a blue moon pnr read. Glad you enjoyed it and are looking forward to the next couple!

  26. Your review leads me to believe that this is more a series of companion novels than a straight up series. That makes me happy to hear and automatically more interested in reading this for myself.
I've heard good things about Bennett's Arcadia Bell series. If your review is anything to go by, it sound like it's high time for me to become acquainted with her works. :)
